REEL vs REAL LIFE

A few days ago, I was scrolling through social media when I came across a post from a friend.

She had just returned from a jungle safari. The pictures were incredible—especially the close-up of a tiger. In the next post, she shared her excitement about an upcoming trip to the US. There were also snapshots of her enjoying her company offsite.

As I moved from one post to another, I felt restlessness, a tinge of jealousy. And a thought crossed my mind, “Why is my life so boring? Uninteresting?”

Thankfully, within minutes, I caught myself. Perhaps age and some life experience helped me.

I reminded myself of something we all know but tend to forget:

What we see on social media is not the whole picture—it’s a carefully chosen frame. A highlight, not the full story.
It’s someone’s REEL life, not their REAL life.

To the younger generation growing up in the thick of social media—here are 4 tips I would like to offer:

🪞 Acknowledge: social media posts are real and have the potential to impact us.

💭 Pause and reflect. If a post makes you feel inadequate, ask yourself why. Feel your feelings, but also ask yourself: what don’t I see in this post?

🌟 You’re not behind. Everyone’s timeline looks different in real life.

💬 Talk to people offline. That’s where the real stories are—the struggles, the doubts, the courage.
