Who is the puppeteer?

Ever wondered why we pour our hearts and souls into personal projects while work projects sometimes feel like a chore?

Here are three likely reasons:

  • Personal projects are like our babies. We choose them because love them. It’s all about that “I want to” rather than the “I have to.” They are driven by strong intrinsic motivation and passion.
  • We are the designers of our personal projects. They are akin to custom-made suits, perfectly tailored to our needs. We set the pace, savoring every step of the journey without the pressure of looming deadlines. It’s about the thrill of learning and growing, not just ticking boxes.
  • As a result, we believe we are in control, truly in charge of what we are doing. We are not answerable to anyone; we do not have to adapt our work based because our manager or a stakeholder wants us to. We do not have to share progress updates… Burning the midnight oil isn’t a chore; it’s a labor of love.

Question for leaders to reflect? How can I infuse magic into my team’s work projects:

  • trigger intrinsic motivation?
  • allow space for design?
  • give deep sense of being in control?
