I have been trying to include strength training into my exercise regime for last few months… I do it couple of times and quickly fall back to my routine.
The change simply doesn’t stick! I realised I am dealing with cognitive inertia.
Just as inertia keeps an object moving in the same direction (or remain stationary) unless an external force acts on it, cognitive inertia keeps us stuck in the same pattern of behavior and thought.
Our brain craves for efficiency and easy route. Once it has learned a pattern, whether its zoning out on Netflix or checking phone first thing in the morning, it clings like glue. And this “brain glue” makes it tough to break out of old habits—or pick up new ones.
However, we can outsmart our brain! Here are three steps I am following:
1️⃣ Start small, I have started with 15 mins strength training, as a result my brain is not rebelling as it seems easy। I am hoping that these 15 minutes will soon increase
2️⃣ Create an environment that supports change. If you’re trying to eat better, keep healthy stuff in plain sight. I started reading more books, when I included audible in my routine
3️⃣ Celebrate the tiny wins – each time you stick to a new habit, your brain registers it as a success. Over time, these small successes can build into lasting change.
Breaking free from cognitive inertia or brain glue is not easy, neither is it impossible
How do you break free?
