What is authenticity

Authentic people stand out for who they are. It’s a joy to connect with them, be at work or in personal life. “Be authentic” is an advice oft given to leaders to help enhance their effectiveness.

What exactly is authenticity? Is it something that can be only felt or experienced?

Or are there elements of concreteness to it?

Authentic individuals demonstrate six key behaviors. I call them the Hallmarks of Authenticity:

1. Consistent behavior and actions that aligns with stated values and beliefs. For example, if they say it’s important to maintain positive attitude and encouragement, they demonstrate it every day and avoid unnecessarily criticizing others or giving excessive negative feedback.

2. Acknowledge mistakes, do not try to hide them, take responsibility and show commitment to learn from them.

3. Be Vulnerable – share personal experiences, challenges or uncertainties. While being vulnerable, they are genuine, rather than being drafty or sharing information that is crafty.

4. Transparent – communicate and act without hidden agendas or intentions. One can comfortably take their communication on face value!

5. Listen to others, show genuine interest in their thoughts and perspectives, even if they are in disagreement

6. Seek feedback and shows willingness to listen and improve.

How else have you experienced authentic individuals?
