Sometime back, I went through a rough patch at work. It was a difficult situation; it evoked a medley of emotions: anger, frustration, disappointment…. Such encounters are common for most professionals, we all go through our share of ups and downs. By evening, I had taken charge of myself. I was feeling almost normal as I entered home. I congratulated myself for getting over it so well. hashtag#resilience
After dinner, I decided to share the situation with my best friend, my husband. It was a bad idea!
As I narrated the incident, all the negative emotions flooded back! I could feel my temples throbbing, the all too familiar headache from afternoon returning – my body’s way to say, “you are stressed, stop this”! I slept poorly.
Next morning, a colleague who was in know of the situation came to speak. As I started discussing, I could feel the rush of the familiar emotions. That’s when I realized what was happening.
The incident happened only once! And I got over it, at least partially. Yet, by discussing it, I was reliving the incident again and again!
Dr Joe Dispenza in his book You are the Placebo says “Your brain and body don’t know the difference between having an actual experience in your life and just thinking about the experience—neurochemically, it’s the same.”
I decided to stop talking and thinking about it. Honestly, it wasn’t easy. My mind wanted to go back to it again. But, I consciously held it back.
So, next time you go through a difficult situation, HIT RESET.
Draw learning from the experience! But, avoid reliving it, simply HIT RESET
At the outset, I would like to thank you for stopping by my Blog.
I believe that there is nothing right or wrong in this world. What’s right in this moment and context may be wrong in another moment and context. This belief has inspired me to name my blog ‘Perspectives’.
