The dragonfly moment

It was a warm, sun drenched winter afternoon. The garden outside was bursting with colour. I curled up near the bay window with a book in my hand.

Soon, a buzzing sound broke my focus. A dragonfly was trapped inside the room. It was desperately trying to escape through the glass window. It flew toward the same spot, hitting the pane with full force, only to bounce back in confusion.

A door was open just a few feet away. Freedom was so close!

Yet the dragonfly remained fixated on the one path it had chosen — the glass window. Exhausted, it fell to the floor; yet it rose only to repeat the same futile effort.

➡️ “Why does this tiny creature insist on the same route?”
➡️ “Why not look for another way out?”

Don’t we often do the same in our professional lives?

We set our sights on one solution, one route to success — and when it doesn’t work, we double down. We try harder, invest more time, effort, resources.

Dragon fly moment is a trap – both for individuals and organizations. Kodak is a classic example. They had the technology for digital photography long before it became mainstream. Yet, they clung to their film business, pouring money into the same path until it was too late.

When faced with a dragonfly moment, pause and ask:
↪️ Is this the right path?
↪️Am I acting out of habit?
↪️Is there another door that I haven’t noticed?

Have you ever found yourself stuck? How did you change your narrative?
