When everyone says YES

You share an idea in the meeting and people start nodding:
“That’s a brilliant idea!”
“Absolutely, let’s get started.”
“This could really move the needle.”
“Totally agree.”
“Wow, love it!”

It feels like a win! If you are the senior most person in the room, it’s time to PAUSE.

Ask yourself the reasons for YES. There are two possibilities here:
1. Your idea truly is brilliant.
2. You’re the boss — and that changes how people respond.

If it’s the first, wonderful. But let’s not rule out the second.

When you hold authority, people may agree not because they actually agree, but because you sign off their appraisals, learning and growth opportunities.
Here’s what you could do differently:

1. Watch the room — not just the words.
→ That hesitant voice, that raised eyebrow, the uncomfortable silence —
someone may be holding back. Invite them in.

2. Ask: “What concerns come to mind?” Not “Are there any concerns?”
→ This opens the floor to dissent without making it feel confrontational.

3. Play devil’s advocate yourself.
→ Say: “If we were to poke holes in this idea, what might be the biggest
flaw?” Show that critique is welcome.

4. Invite ‘yes, but…’ thinking.
→ Ask, “What would you tweak if you had to make this better?” You’ll be
surprised how creative and honest people get when given permission.

Have you experienced this at workplace? What actions do you take to bring TRUTH to the fore?
