Imagine this: You’re on a road trip with your friends. You have meticulously planned every detail. The snacks are packed, the playlist is ready, and the route is set. But halfway through, your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. What happens next determines whether your trip is a tale of triumph or frustration.
Success in life is a lot like this road trip. It boils down to two factors:
1. How we manage things within our control and
2. How we handle things beyond our control.
🟣 Factor 1: Managing What We Can Control
Let’s revisit the road trip. Before setting off, we can get the car thoroughly serviced, fill the fuel tank and ensure there is a spare tire. We might even take on-call road service.
Similarly, at work for example, while working on a project, we take time to plan all the milestones along with checklists, gather the necessary resources, brainstorm for what can go wrong and create risk mitigation plans. For very critical projects, we might create back-ups for back-ups.
🟣 Factor 2: Handling What We Can’t Control
Now, back to our road trip. When the car breaks down, we can’t wish the engine back to life.
What we can do is decide how to react: stay calm, call for help, or make the best of the situation while we wait.
In the workplace, we face situations beyond our control, like sudden policy changes, budget constraints, or an unexpected move by a competitor. In moments like this, patience and adaption is key.
True success is a dance between effort and adaptability – how we navigate the twists and turns.
Here are two questions for you:
1️⃣ Are you doing everything you can to control the controllable?
2️⃣ When life throws a curveball, are you ready to catch it with grace?
