65% respondents said that they set a new year resolution or goal (My LinkedIn poll last week)
Studies have shown that Gym memberships surge in January; ~12% new members join, but the attendance drops by ~50% by March. Only 9% report successfully sticking to their New Year resolutions by December.
So how can we stay on track? Three things helped me personally:
- Start Small: Instead of overwhelming yourself with ambitious goals, begin with manageable steps. For example, when I decided to exercise regularly, I started with just 15-minute walks and gradually increased the intensity.
- Club It with Enjoyment: Pair your resolution with something you already love. For example, I hated exercising, but I loved to read. So, I clubbed listening to audible while walking. This made exercising enjoyable and sustainable.
- Don’t Miss It Twice, as pointed out by James Clear in his book ‘Atomic Habits’. It’s natural to slip up occasionally, get back on track the next day without guilt.
