Do you find your thoughts flowing more easily when you are writing by hand than typing?
If yes, we are alike!
It turns out there is a neurological connection between thinking and writing. Here’s why putting pen to paper can actually make us think better:
- Writing is akin to giving our brain a workout. While writing, we use different parts of our brain that handle memory, language and problem solving, whereas typing doesn’t trigger these areas. Thus, writing leads to clearer thoughts and better ideas.
- Writing is slower than typing…. we have more time to think, allowing us to process information and prioritize what is really important. The slower pace gives our brains space to breathe and get creative.
- Writing helps us get sensory feedback: feel of the pen / pencil, sight of words on paper, different colors, shapes etc. This feedback activates multiple senses which interconnect different parts of the brain.
- Finally, writing helps us focus better, away from notifications and digital distractions.
Have you experienced the difference between writing and typing? Are you on the other end of spectrum and prefer to type?
Would love to hear your thoughts.
