I remember my manager from yesteryears. I was leading a cross-functional project for the first time. I was struggling to influence couple of stakeholders. She gave me feedback, “Padma you need to be more assertive with your stakeholders.”
However, she didn’t stop at that. She shared few tips from her experience, invited me to shadow her in high-level meetings. For couple of specially difficult members, she role-played the meetings for me to practice.
This extensive follow-through helped me develop and I completed the project successfully few months later. It also helped me learn and grow my confidence, far beyond what a mere feedback could achieve. I am grateful to have worked with such an amazing manager early in my career.
Most managers consider their job done once they give feedback. It is valuable, but its only scratching the surface.
Excellent managers help you work through the constructive feedback and develop. They:
🟩 Provide guidance and necessary resources
🟩 Give access to development opportunities / resources
🟩 Celebrate small wins, thus motivating you to stay on course
A good manager gives timely feedback, but a great manager transforms that feedback into a learning journey.
Have you ever worked with managers who transformed your lives through their feedback? Would love to hear your experience.
