Our biases…

As I was scrolling through Instagram; a graceful kathak dance caught my attention. As I paused to watch the reel, I realized that it was a male dancer.

I loved everything about the dance… except a man dancing in a style typically associated with women.. My first reaction was that of disgust!! My initial reaction was one of disgust, a feeling that left me ashamed but was undeniably real.

I moved on; few seconds later I realized my bias and scrolled back. This time I watched the full reel. I loved it! But only and only after I overcame my bias.

We all have our biases – on what should or shouldn’t be!

Our antennas instantly go up when we encounter someone who is very different from us or our expectations – speaks, dresses, behaves differently.

When we act on our biases, we run the risk of missing out wonderful things in life.

In moments like this, I reflect on my initial reaction: “why do I feel this way. Is it based on preconceived notions or reality”?

How do you recognize and overcome your biases?
