Research indicates that we naturally tend to move towards similarity. Thus, it’s easy to build relationships with people just like as. They help create a social world where we get to work with people who understand us, trust us and cooperate to meet our goals.

However, we grow only by doing diverse things and building on different ideas. This can happen when we build networks with people who are different from us.

Three tips to broaden and diversify our internal network.

1. Look beyond chemistry: instead of waiting for connections to naturally happen, seek out new people from different backgrounds, skills and values.

2. Make it a habit to catch up with colleagues. Schedule interactions and don’t rely on chance encounters.

3. Harness curiosity: try seeing interpersonal differences as opportunities, ask questions to understand perspectives and experiences and nurture the relationship through understanding.
