Baobab tree, also known as the ‘tree of life’, is iconic to Africa. Recently, I had the privilege of seeing the magnificent Baobab closer to home, nestled within the confines of Mumbai zoo. Despite being thousands of miles away from its native land, the Baobab tree’s presence ignited a reflection on the essence of Purpose.
Purpose, often described as the ‘raison d’être’, is the driving force that propels individuals and organizations forward on their journey through life. For individuals, it infuses every action with meaning and fulfilment, giving a sense of contribution that transcends the mundane. Likewise, for organizations, Purpose represents more than just the pursuit of profits, market share or market capitalization; it embodies the very reason for their existence, guiding their decisions and actions towards a higher calling.
As I stood before the magnificent Baobab tree, I couldn’t help reflect on its profound symbolism in relation to Purpose.
– Foundational – Baobab tree’s extensive root system provides stability and nourishment. Akin to this, Purpose gives individuals and organizations a sense of grounding and direction, guiding our decisions and action.
– Unique contribution – Baobab tree has a unique purpose: to thrive in harsh environment, provide shelter and nourishment to other living beings. Similarly, any individual or organization have a unique contribution to make to this world. All we need to do is identify our unique skills, capabilities and passions.
– Resilience and adaptability exhibited by Baobab tree is unparalleled. Similarly, purpose enables individuals and organizations better navigate challenges, providing them inspiration and resilience to overcome obstacles.
– Interconnectedness – Baobab tree is part of a larger ecosystem, playing its role exceptionally well. When aligned with meaningful purpose, individuals and organizations recognize their role in creating positive social, environmental and economic impact.
– Longevity of Baobab tree symbolizes the enduring legacy of purpose driven actions. Purpose extends beyond immediate goals or outcomes, guiding individuals and organizations towards meaningful sustainable legacy.
Baobab tree exemplifies the ripple effect of Purpose, reminding us that the Purpose is not something that we have to find or create, but something that we already have within us, at times buried deep down. All that it takes is the effort to excavate it and bring it to life! Are we prepared to explore within?
