What catches your attention in this bunch of spider lilies?
I took this picture during my morning walk in my apartment garden. Apart from the beauty of these snow-white flowers, what caught my attention was the different life stages: a tiny bud, one ready to bloom, a lily in full bloom, one wilting, and other dried.
I saw similar pattern in several other plants.
As a I reflect, I think maintaining this balance is fundamental for success and prosperity in life: be it individuals, teams, or organizations.
Let’s consider organizations: successful organizations have a mix of portfolios. Building on BCG matrix, these organizations have
– stars (ready to bloom flowers)
– cash cows (flowers in full bloom)
– question marks (tiny buds)
– pets (wilting flowers)
It applies to workforce in organizations: in terms of
– tenure – candidates being interviewed, to new candidates, experienced, very long serving to retired
– age and generations
This principle is applicable to teams and individuals as well, the portfolio of projects and tasks that we carry out are in different stages, some are:
– closed with impact
– on the verge of closure
– going in full swing
– picking up speed
– in experimental stage
Have you seen patterns like this in your life? success portfolio
How do they influence success of an organization, team or individual?
How does the lack of such mix impact the results? Would love to hear your thoughts…..
